What Is “Bloom” on Beeswax Candles?
At Origine Candles, we work with natural beeswax. One of its natural features is called “bloom”
You may see a soft white layer appear on the surface over time. This is not a flaw, but a natural sign of the wax’s purity.
What is Bloom?
Bloom (also known as beeswax bloom or wax bloom) is a natural crystallisation process that occurs when the wax interacts with air. As the candle rests, tiny particles within the beeswax slowly rise to the surface, forming a velvety white finish.
It is similar to the patina that develops on fine materials— organic, and entirely unique to each piece.
Why Does It Appear?
Bloom appears because your candle is made from pure, unaltered beeswax.
Unlike paraffin or heavily processed waxes, beeswax retains its natural composition. Over time, temperature changes and exposure to air encourage the wax’s natural oils to crystallise on the surface.
In short, bloom is not something added—it is something revealed.
Does Bloom Affect the Candle?
Not at all.
Bloom does not impact the quality, scent, or burn of your candle in any way. It remains exactly as it was intended: clean-burning, long-lasting, and naturally fragrant.
In fact, many consider bloom to be a sign of authenticity—proof that the candle is made from genuine beeswax, free from additives.
Can It Be Removed?
If you prefer a polished finish, bloom can be easily removed.
Soft cloth method
Simply take a soft cloth and gently buff the surface of the candle. The warmth of your touch will restore its original, subtle sheen.
Hair dryer method
Ideal for removing bloom completely. Gently warm the surface with a hair dryer until the bloom disappears. Take your time and keep a safe distance to avoid softening or altering the candle’s outer texture while allowing the heat to reach deeper areas.
Warm water method
A simple and effective alternative for removing bloom, especially on highly textured surfaces. Gently rinse the candle under warm water (no hotter than comfortable to the touch). Allow it to air dry completely, including the wick, before use.
This method is often quicker than using a hair dryer and reduces the risk of melting the wax, making it a preferred option when drying time is not an issue.
Over time, bloom may reappear— naturally, beautifully.
A Mark of Nature
At Origine, we embrace the beauty of natural materials in their truest form. Bloom is not something to hide, but something to appreciate—a soft reminder that your candle is crafted from pure elements, and alive with character.
